The Story of Morrison's Quarry: From Limestone Mine to Adventure Destination

Long before it became home to Canada's Highest Bungee Jump, Morrison's Quarry had already established itself as a unique part of the Outaouais landscape. Today, visitors know it for its crystal-clear blue water and breathtaking limestone cliffs, but its story began over a century ago as an active mining operation.

A Quarry with a Rich History

Until 1967, the site operated as Maxwell Mine, where workers extracted brucite, a naturally occurring mineral prized for its flame-retardant properties and industrial applications. Over decades of mining, towering limestone walls were carved into the landscape, creating the dramatic cliffs that now surround the quarry.

One of the quarry's most striking features is its brilliant turquoise-blue water. This vibrant colour comes from the surrounding limestone, which naturally influences the water's appearance, creating the stunning backdrop that has become synonymous with Morrison's Quarry.

When mining operations came to an end in 1967, nature slowly reclaimed the site. Groundwater filled the quarry, creating a pristine, spring-fed lake that reaches depths of approximately 146 feet. What was once an industrial site transformed into one of the most beautiful natural attractions in the Outaouais region.

A World-Class Diving Destination

While Great Canadian Bungee operates from one side of the quarry, the other side has earned its own international reputation as one of the region's premier freshwater scuba diving destinations.

Since the 1970s, divers have travelled from across Canada and beyond to explore the clear waters of Morrison's Quarry. The exceptional visibility makes it an ideal location for both recreational and technical diving, with daytime, overnight, and multi-day dive opportunities available throughout the season.

To enhance the underwater experience, a variety of attractions have been intentionally submerged over the years, including an airplane, several vehicles, boats, and other fascinating artifacts. These underwater features create an unforgettable experience for divers of every skill level.

It's not uncommon to see scuba divers surfacing from the lake while guests are preparing to leap from Canada's Highest Bungee just a few hundred metres away—a unique combination of adventures found nowhere else.

More Than Just Adventure

Morrison's Quarry isn't only for thrill-seekers. The site also features a beautiful beach area operated by the Morrison family, providing the perfect place to spend a relaxing summer day.

Since opening to the public in 1991, the beach has continued to evolve, offering amenities such as picnic areas, volleyball courts, barbecue facilities, seating areas, and water activities. Whether you're visiting with family, spending the day with friends, or simply enjoying the scenery, there's something for everyone.

For many visitors, the beach also serves another purpose: a place to relax while working up the courage to take the leap from Great Canadian Bungee. After your jump—or your zipline adventure—you can head back down to the beach, cool off in the clear water, and enjoy the rest of your day in one of Quebec's most picturesque settings.

One Destination, Endless Experiences

Few places offer such a unique combination of history, natural beauty, and adventure. From its beginnings as an industrial limestone quarry to its transformation into a destination for bungee jumping, ziplining, scuba diving, and family recreation, Morrison's Quarry has continually reinvented itself while preserving the spectacular landscape that makes it so special.

Whether you're here to conquer Canada's Highest Bungee Jump, explore the underwater world, or simply spend the afternoon by the water, Morrison's Quarry offers an experience unlike anywhere else in the country.
